A deputy spotted a 19-year-old Camden man driving a white Mustang at high speed on Medfield Road in Lugoff around 4 a.m. Monday with no lights on. The deputy was able to stop the car, saw parts of an air conditioning unit and asked the young man about them. The man said he had gotten them from the dump and claimed he was in a hurry because his girlfriend was at a nearby motel having trouble breathing. The deputy wrote the man a ticket and sent him on his way -- but followed him to the motel to see if they needed EMS. As the deputy and Mustang drove up to the hotel, the deputy spotted two other Camden men, 19 and 18 years of age, unloading a white Chevy SUV. As the deputy approached, they closed the back of the SUV and shut the door to one of the motel rooms. The deputy asked the driver of the Mustang where the girl was and he stated she wasn’t there. The two other suspects came over and the deputy asked them for their IDs. The deputy spotted a large amount of metal in the SUV. He obtained consent to search the SUV and found a lot of metal pipe and couplings. More metal was found in the motel room. Investigators were called to the scene and the young men reportedly confessed to stealing the metal from a sprinkler company and heating and air conditioning company, both in Lugoff.
A 14-year-old boy reportedly confessed to purchasing 8 grams of marijuana in eight separate zip bags from a 17-year-old boy. The deputy spoke with the boy after being handed a cell phone containing the older boy’s phone number and text messages detailing the transaction. The 14-year-old said he contacted the older boy in order to purchase the marijuana in order to resell it at a northeast Columbia movie theater and nearby skating rink. They reportedly met at the end of the younger boy’s street and the transaction was conducted in a dark green, extended cab pickup truck.
